The coin collection of the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Regensburg originates from the private
collection of the engineer and architect Franz Langlotz (1876-1953). Due to his personal interest and passion he managed to
collect many objects of ancient art – including Attic and southern Italian painted ceramics, 42 (mostly Roman) glass vessels,
small bronze objects, Hellenistic terracotta statuettes – and 25 coins (mainly Roman denarii).
Born in Regensburg, Langlotz bequeathed half of this collection, including the coins, to his former school, the Humanistisches
Gymnasium, now the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium. From 1991 to 1994, on the initiative of Prof Dr Dieter Salzmann, over 800 ancient
coins were added, mainly as donations from various German auction houses and coin cabinets as well as permanent loans from
the Historisches Museum Regensburg. Designed as a study collection, it now covers all the important historical regions and
Roman provinces of the Mediterranean and beyond, organised chronologically from the Greek Archaic period to the Byzantine
era.
