Timarchus was appointed satrap (governor) of Media by Antiochus IV in c. 175 BC. When the king died in 164 BC, he became a
virtually independent ruler in his satrapy. Timarchus actively opposed Demetrius I and in 162 BC proclaimed himself as a rival
king with the recognition of Rome. Although he managed to expand his kingdom into Babylonia, Timarchus was defeated and killed
by Demetrius I in 161 BC.
