The term itself is a revival of the early Byzantine term of follis. Follaro now identifies Late Palaeologan copper coins of
c. 14 mm in diametre and c. 0.6 grams of weight. Known from Italian sources such as Pegolotti and Badoer as follari. As a
result of the continuation of Byzantine bronze coinage by Norman authorities in southern Italy, this denomination was also
