The Reich von Reichenstein were a knightly dynasty first mentioned in 1166/79 with Rudolf Dives. Originally ministeriales of the bishops of Basel, they held the office of kämmerer (chamberlain) from the beginning of the 13th century and received the castle of Reichenstein near Arlesheim as a fief from the bishop of Basel around 1250. From the 13th to the middle of the 15th century, the Reich von Reichenstein were represented in the council of the city of Basel, provided six mayors of Basel, a bishop of Basel and a rector of the University of Basel. Ministerial family of the diocese of Chur and aristocratic family with Schauenstein Castle (municipality of Masein) as their ancestral seat and significant property on Heinzenberg and in Domleschg. The brothers Burkhard and Gottfried were first mentioned in 1258. In the 14th century, they were at times viceroys in Domleschg and bailiffs of Cazis Monastery. Several of their members were bailiffs in Maienfeld or held the highest offices in Valtellina. In 1583 they acquired the lordship of Trins with Tamins, Reichenau and Trin, which was renamed the lordship of Reichenau in 1616 after Trin was bought out and the family moved their seat there. From 1608-1701 they also held the lordship of Haldenstein. Barons from 1612. In 1742, the Schauenstein family died out with count Thomas Franz and the inheritance passed to his nephew Johann Anton Buol.

Gerhard was appointed already in 1309 by pope Clemens V, but the chathedral chapter of basel elected Lüthold II. von Rötteln as bishop.
