Jacob Pfahler

Definition
Appointed Mintmaster for Paderborn in May 1612, although he had already been minting there as early as 1609, and before 1612 he was Mintmaster in Marsberg. In 1618 he took up the Directorship of the Detmold Mint. In October 1620 he was removed from his position as Mintmaster at Corvey (Imperial Abbey of Corvey, now within territory of the city of Höxter) and Lippe on account of his age and ill health. In fact he was appointed to the Mint in Höxter in October 1619, and in the same decade he was striking coins for Hameln and Nordheim. His health seemed to have improved and he was reappointed Mintmaster for Corvey in May 1631; Coins with dates 1631 and 1632 were struck by Pfahler in Corvey, after which time nothing was heard of him. Pfahler was born in Saalfeld in 1568. Lit.: Alfred Noss, Die Münzen der Erzbischöfe von Köln 1547-1794 (1925) p. 127.

State Museum of Prehistory Halle

Definition
The State Museum of Prehistory in Halle is a part of the archaeological conservation service in Saxony-Anhalt and numbers amongst the most eminent archaeological museums in central Europe. The archaeological collection is one of the oldest, most extensive and most important collections in Germany. The finds are composed of legacies of pre-historic and early-historical people of all kinds and from all times: tools, jewelry, weapons, leftovers of food, building materials and skeletal remains. There are also numerous scientific samples, comparative material and replicas. The extensive collection of more than 15 million finds includes numerous pieces of worldwide renown, such as the Nebra Sky Disc, which was included in the UNESCO documentary heritage "Memory of the World" in 2013. In addition, the collection includes an extensive, steadily growing collection of coins with currently about 25.000 pieces. Most of the coins are finds from archaeological excavations and prospecting in Saxony-Anhalt. The focus is therefore on coins of the Central German States from the Middle Ages to modern times. Furthermore several hundred Roman and some Celtic coins are in stock.

Seleucus I Nicator

Definition
Seleucus I Nicator ("the Victor") (satrap, 321–305 BC; king, 305–281 BC) was the founder of the Seleucid Empire. He had served as an infantry commander under Alexander the Great and became chiliarch (i.e. vizier) to Perdiccas at the Settlement of Babylon (323 BC). In 321 BC, after the death of Perdiccas he was appointed satrap (governor) of Babylonia. He was driven out by Antigonus Monophthalmus in 315 BC, but managed to return and hold the satrapy in 312. Seleucus I assumed the royal title in 305 BC and embarked upon a great eastern campaign that created a Seleucid Empire stretching from Babylonia and Syria to the borders of India. He played a pivotal role in the defeat and death of Antigonus at the Battle of Ipsus (301 BC). Seleucus I expanded his empire into Asia Minor after defeating and killing Lysimachus, the king of Thrace who had claimed Antigonus' territories in Asia Minor, at the Battle of Corupedium (281 BC). Seleucus I was assassinated later in 281 BC as he advanced to take possession of Thrace.

Mithradates VI

Definition
As son of Mithradates V and Laodice VI he was born c. 134 BC in Sinope. From c. 120 until his death in 63 BC he ruled the Pontic kingdom. Because of his growing influence in Asia Minor he came in conflict with Rome, and as a consequence the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean was newly defined by the three "Mithradatic wars". In the course of these wars he issued rich currency. Also he is attested as first magistrate in Athens in 87/86 BC, explicitly identified as the Pontic king by the addition ΒΑΣΙΛΕ(υς): See M. Thompson, The New Style Silver Coinage of Athens (1961) nos. 1143-1146 / her issue 76 (p. 575); C. Habicht, Zu den Münzmagistraten der Silberprägung des Neuen Stils, Chiron 21, 1991, pp. 6 and 12 (87/86 BC, his issue 78); Prosopographia Attica 10186 and 10187; W. Leschhorn, Lexikon der Aufschriften auf griechischen Münzen II (2009) 687 s. v. Mithradates.
