Definitions

Under the name of von Thun, two noble families existed in the Bernese Oberland in the 12th and 13th centuries, one of free status, the other as ministerials of the Counts of Kyburg. The Barons of Thun are said to have originated from the environment of the Counts of Rapperswil, while the Lords of Burgistein also emerged from the knightly family of Thun as a side branch.
