Burkhard of Oltigen was Bishop of Lausanne from 1056 until his death. He supported Henry IV during the Investiture Controversy,
was excommunicated and travelled with the emperor to Canossa in 1077. Shortly afterwards, he fought the opposing king Rudolf
of Swabia and put pressure on his wife Adelheid in Zurich. In 1079, Henry IV appointed him Chancellor of Italy and he received
the imperial estate of Lutry as a gift. Burkhard died during the siege of Gleichen in 1089.
