Germania

Definition
Germania, also called Magna Germania (English: Great Germania), Germania Libera (English: Free Germania), or Germanic Barbaricum to distinguish it from the Roman province of the same name, was a historical region in north-central Europe during the Roman era, which was associated by Roman authors with the Germanic people. The region stretched roughly from the Middle and Lower Rhine in the west to the Vistula in the east. It also extended at some point as far south as the Upper and Middle Danube and Pannonia, and to the known parts of southern Scandinavia in the north (this being linked to Germanic Migration Period).

Camurius (?) Severus

Definition
Strategos in Cyzicus/Mysia c. AD 169 to 175, possibly until AD 180. His name appears on pseudo-autonomous coins issued during the reign of Marcus Aurelius in combination with his title of Strategos, c. AD 169-175, possibly as late as AD 180, see RPC IV,2 Temp. nos. 713, 9692, and 11203. The reading of ΚΑΜΟΥ [= Camurius?] (see Leschhorn) or ΚΛ ΜΟΥ [= Claudius Mu...?] (see RPC) CΕΒΗΡΟC is not clear, thus he is probably identical with the strategos of RPC IV,2 Temp. nos. 710, 712, 751, and 10163. Lit.: W. Leschhorn, Lexikon der Aufschriften auf griechischen Münzen II (2009) p. 591 s. v. Kamourios and p. 800 s. v. Seberos (AD 175-180).

Coin collection of the Archaeological Museum of the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg

Definition
In 1841, the United Friedrichs-University Halle-Wittenberg decided to set up an archaeological University collection. However, this project could not be implemented until 1849. In this year the first quite small archaeological gallery was opened as the first public art collection in Halle. The core of this museum was the "Münzkabinett" formed by Johann Heinrich Schulze (1687-1744), which already provided access to original coins for lectures and exercises on ancient numismatics during his life-time. By doing this Schulze became a founder of numismatic teaching at University. This core collection, the "Numophylacium Schulzianum", can thus be linked to the development of the European Enlightenment in the 18th century in Halle, and it still is preserved here today. Almost half of today’s inventory of c. 5.000 coins (a total of c. 1.400 Greek, some Byzantine, and Oriental coins, the remaining two thirds are Roman) originates from Schulze’s collection.

Between the 15th and 16th centuries, this mint produced diners, ardits, reials, pougeoises (quarters of diner), lead diners, senyals (tokens), and half-senyals made of copper. In 1716, their operations ceased as the newly crowned King Philip V of Spain denied them the minting license.
