Camurius (?) Severus

Definition
Strategos in Cyzicus/Mysia c. AD 169 to 175, possibly until AD 180. His name appears on pseudo-autonomous coins issued during the reign of Marcus Aurelius in combination with his title of Strategos, c. AD 169-175, possibly as late as AD 180, see RPC IV,2 Temp. nos. 713, 9692, and 11203. The reading of ΚΑΜΟΥ [= Camurius?] (see Leschhorn) or ΚΛ ΜΟΥ [= Claudius Mu...?] (see RPC) CΕΒΗΡΟC is not clear, thus he is probably identical with the strategos of RPC IV,2 Temp. nos. 710, 712, 751, and 10163. Coin collection of the Archaeological Museum of the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg

Definition
In 1841, the United Friedrichs-University Halle-Wittenberg decided to set up an archaeological University collection. However, this project could not be implemented until 1849. In this year the first quite small archaeological gallery was opened as the first public art collection in Halle. The core of this museum was the "Münzkabinett" formed by Johann Heinrich Schulze (1687-1744), which already provided access to original coins for lectures and exercises on ancient numismatics during his life-time. By doing this Schulze became a founder of numismatic teaching at University. This core collection, the "Numophylacium Schulzianum", can thus be linked to the development of the European Enlightenment in the 18th century in Halle, and it still is preserved here today. Almost half of today’s inventory of c. 5.000 coins (a total of c. 1.400 Greek, some Byzantine, and Oriental coins, the remaining two thirds are Roman) originates from Schulze’s collection.

Samarqand

Definition
Samarkand (Tajik: Samarqand Самарқанд; Persian: سمرقند‎ Cyrillic/Russian: Самарканд from Sogdian: "Stone Fort" or "Rock Town"), alternatively Samarqand or Samarcand, traditionally was the second-largest city inUzbekistan and the capital of Samarqand Province. It is now the nation's third largest, after fast-growing Namangan in the Ferghana Valley. The city is most noted for its central position on the Silk Road betweenChina and the West, and for being an Islamic centre for scholarly study. In the 14th century it became the capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane) and is the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Bibi-Khanym Mosque(a modern replica) remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. The Registan was the ancient center of the city. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood.
