Ministerial family of the diocese of Chur and aristocratic family with Schauenstein Castle (municipality of Masein) as their ancestral seat and significant property on Heinzenberg and in Domleschg. The brothers Burkhard and Gottfried were first mentioned in 1258. In the 14th century, they were at times viceroys in Domleschg and bailiffs of Cazis Monastery. Several of their members were bailiffs in Maienfeld or held the highest offices in Valtellina. In 1583 they acquired the lordship of Trins with Tamins, Reichenau and Trin, which was renamed the lordship of Reichenau in 1616 after Trin was bought out and the family moved their seat there. From 1608-1701 they also held the lordship of Haldenstein. Barons from 1612. In 1742, the Schauenstein family died out with count Thomas Franz and the inheritance passed to his nephew Johann Anton Buol.
